| A friend of mine has just had over £1,000 taken from his account in just a week. The card was first used on a small purchase for about £10 and when that cleared it was used to book a flight, hotel, car hire to name but a few. The bank stopped the card but said there would still be pending transactions that would go through. The money should be paid back but it's the inconvenience of being out of pocket in between. Why these people aren't caught though is beyond me. If the fraud teams, police, banks and outlets/websites where the stolen card details are being used collaborated more then these people would get caught. The airline concerned should be able to flag up at check in that the booking is criminal and call security when they try to check in. But what do they care - they've had their payment!

| This has happened to someone who I know and it's thought to have started in a local petrol station. The card was used to pay for fuel and then just under 2 hours later the card was being used for fraudulent purchases elsewhere. There was a news piece from the Times about this and it seems that as petrol stations tend to just have one member of staff on, it's easy for crooks to go in, distract the attendant asking for something and then fit a card reader on to the card payment device. They then go back a few hours later and remove it with all the recently used cards details recorded. The fraud team interviewed for the piece said that they only use cash in fuel stations now for this reason, although these days this isn't always convenient. Always be aware when using cards, never let them out of your site and protect your pin from straying eyes when using it!
