It dismays me to see the news headlines showing yet another child has had his life abruptly ended whilst out playing with friends.  Where are these kids getting guns from and where is the discipline and teaching of right from wrong? How can they readily just go out and take a life? Perhaps bringing back something along the lines of National Service might give kids the discipline that seems to be lacking these days and teach them to have some respect for themselves and especially other people.

hi just red you post( only just got on line)

when i was a young lad in liverpool many years ago i was allways taught to respect my

elders and to give up my seat on a tram to women and older people , to respect other peoples property , and if you did not comlply you wher chastised by your parents,

but to day the young seem to think that we the older generation owe them respect before they have earnd it ,

i cant think of anything better than good parenting , i loved my parents no matter what,

and if they chastised me fore doing wrong then i deserved it and i braught my kids up thesame way and they turnd out fine.

As somewhat of a libertarian I don't think anyone should be forced to do anything, particularly take up arms against others (where would they go? Iraq? Would we have to start wars to find occupation for what would amount to a conscript army?), but I agree that the situation is deteriorating rapidly and should be brought under control by whatever means possible. Channelling rebellion into something active but community-orientated would be good but no-one at the moment can or will come up with a coherent policy on anything and just makes it up as they go along.

Anything really should be designed along the lines of the German system, where instead of compulsory military service young people should be given a choice of projects - environmental, social, care-oriented, etc. It would have to be compulsory - I think there was a voluntary system proposed by my own party on this but that's nonsense because no-one would sign up if they could have a better life roaming the streets with a knife looking for their next victim - but I don't like the idea of taking toughs off the streets and legitimising them by giving them guns. It would be like giving a fox the keys to the henhouse.

Should we bring back National Service?

It might be better for Government Ministers, on both sides of the house, to agree on "forcing" all these youths and anti-social adults into training courses or jobs.

Think of the millions of pounds that could be saved by not having to pay out job seekers allowance to all those over 16 who are currently unemployed and wondering the streets.

They do not seem to be called to go on training courses, or prove they are actively seeking employment every week.

Meanwhile I know of women aged 59 who are called in to start a training course or do some kind of part-time work. Nothing wrong with that, but considering that 60 is still retirement age for women, one year of work aside the possibility of 44 to 49 years of work and paying taxes by a fit young person, seems a little biased against the elderly again.

discipline has been missing in this country ever since the goody goodies of this country started interfering. gun crime and knife attacks have spiraled because "they" know all "they'll" get is a "smacked" wrist. Soldiers dont just go to "war" they are taught trades that they can use in civie street. But most of all they are taught to be upright members of this country, wether they be men or women! National Service would sort the "wheat from the chaff" and there's nothing wrong in that.

Right on sista! bringing back national service would be a good thing for the youth of today. When I was a teenager I joined the army cadets because of a lack of things to do around the area I lived in. I didn't want to stand on street corners with a cheap can of beer and being an all round nuisance, I wanted direction, structure, something to aim for, somewhere to channel excess energy without getting in to trouble. It's the best thing I ever did, I thought I was disciplined, boy was I wrong! Tell you something else as well, it knocked every little bit of cockyness out of me. It did me the world of good and national service should be brought back. If you let the youth lay about and do naff all and get dole money without even looking for a job then they will turn in to lager louts. Give them structure and something to do, then they're off the street corners and doing something productive.

Defo agree that National Service should be introduced again. This will get young adolescents off the streets and give them something to do.
