| I can't really say I know my neighbours very well as I hardly ever see them and so don't feel there is any sense of community spirit where I live. However, I do have friends who live in small villages where everyone seems to know each other and they do seem to do more as a community with events etc. I think it depends on where you live.

I live in a small village and would say that community spirit is a bit here and there. There are small "communities" within the community linked to particular areas i.e. parents with kids at school, toddlers, nursery; people attached to the church and it's groups; the bowling club. People seem to come home from work and shut the door. It takes a lot of hard work to put on a community event here, I know I was involved in arranging an event to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee, which was a success, but people have to "encouraged" to get involved. There is an agriculture show held every year but that attracts more visitors than locals as most people living in the village commute to work in the large towns and cities and have no interest in "rural" affairs. There invariably seems to be to kinds of people in the village, people who have lived here there whole life and think it should be done their way as they have been here longer or people who have moved from larger towns or cities and expect it to be as easy to get help to do these things, which it should be but inevitably isn't. In my village there's a community spirit - people say hello and are friendly, there are local shops where people know the regulars and are happy to help, but that's because I got involved in village life (playgroups, coffee mornings, local charity, village day...). My husband disagrees because he works and therefore does less in the village, so doesn't know so many people. In fact, he's a bit intimidated of the fact I seem to know every second person when we walk down the high street!
Hugs!
